Everyone keeps yelling that paying in cash is cheaper than paying with credit at gas stations. I have never seen these in VA and if there are any stations, it probably those tiny mom & pop shops that don't get the credit card volume to justify paying the transaction fees.

out here in oregon it is damn near everywhere (at least in Portland) Credit is often 10-20 cents a gallon more

For years my mother has pre-paid with cash, never pumps enough, and then needs to go back inside of the store to get change. I first learned how to enter a zen-like state in order not be mad about it as a crappy 14 year old way too cool to riding around with mom. Debit card master race reporting in.

IIRC gas stations don't make any money on the gas they make all their money on selling the crap they have inside, which means it makes sense for them to incentivize customers to come in and pay cash so they will be tempted by all the overpriced crap for sale inside

Having gone through a (nearly) horrendous situation last week, their claims are not entirely unfounded

Wife called me at work and asked if I had spent fifty bucks at a McDonald's in Florida. I'm not sure just why she had to ask this but, anyway, there it was. We hadn't been to Florida in years and I'm pretty sure we never stopped at a McD's there anyway. She calls the credit union, finds out it was my card number being used and they had blocked payment on a five hundred dollar charge to IKEA, eight hundred to Best Buy, and a few others

The only thing my card ever gets used for is filling up the tanks. And somehow my info was grabbed

I love the response from Triumph of Will Clark: "...More than that, I myself have had my ATM/Credit Card number ripped off from using one of those machines on the pump. I pay cash now because I don't to get charged for a laptop I don't own". Never use a debit/ATM card. My card issuer watches for unusual activity and calls me immediately to verify the transaction. If I am not available, they suspend the card until they speak with me. Plus I get points with each transaction that I redeem for cash of merchandise.

It's very common here in Missouri to see a cheaper price for gas if you pay with cash. Gas stations, like any other business, are charged a card processing fee every time somebody swipes their card. They offer that discount, usually around 10 cents, to encourage people to pay cash so they can avoid those credit card fees. It's like small mom and pop businesses that have a $5 minimum purchase for a credit or debit card.
